Ubuntu - I in You and You in Me

By:Battle, Michael

With foreword by Archbishop Desmond Tutu

As defined by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a person with Ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper selfassurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed.

The African spiritual principle of Ubuntu offers believers a new and radical way of reading the Gospel and understanding the heart of the Christian faith, and this new book explores the meaning and utility of Ubuntu as applied to Western philosophies, faith, and lifestyles.

Ubuntu is an African way of seeing self-identity formed -through community. This is a difficult worldview for many Western people, who understand self as over, against, or in competition with others. In the Western viewpoint, Ubuntu becomes something to avoid—a kind of codependency. As a Christian leader who understands the need, intricacies, and delicate workings of global interdependency, Battle offers here both a refreshing worldview and a new perspective of self-identity for people across cultures, and of all faiths.

Paperback, 176 pp, May 2009.

Michael Battle, former dean of Virginia Theological Seminary, is one of the major leaders/planners of the 2009 General Convention of the Episcopal Church. Ordained by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, he is canon theologian of the Diocese of Los Angeles and rector of Our Savior Parish in San Gabriel, California.

“Michael’s book helps us all to see that we are all inextricably linked together. We forget this at our peril. The good news, however, is that God’s love will not leave us alone. It is my prayer that, in the same way, Ubuntu will not leave us alone.” —Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Prize-winner and retired archbishop of Cape Town, South Africa

Reasonable and Holy - Engaging Same-Sexuality

By:Haller, Tobias Stanislas

Reasonable and Holy addresses the conflict over homosexuality within the Anglican tradition, demonstrating that the church is able to provide for and support faithful and loving relationships between persons of the same sex, not as a departure from that tradition, but as a reasonable extension of it.

It offers a carefully argued, but accessible means of engagement with Scripture, the Jewish and Christian traditions, and the use of reason in dealing with the experience and lives of fellow-Christians. Unlike most reflections on the topic of homosexuality, Reasonable and Holy examines same-sex relationships through the lens of the traditional teaching on the “ends” or “goods” of marriage: procreation, union, the upbuilding of society, the symbolic representation of Christ and the Church, and the now often unmentioned “remedy for fornication.” Throughout, it responds to objections based on reason, tradition and Scripture.

Based on a series of popular blog posts, it includes a number of independent, but related resources in the form of side-bars and single-page expansions of particular themes, suitable for reproduction as handouts. It also includes discussion-starters and a concluding Q&A in each chapter. It is intended in part as a fulfillment of the "Listening Process" recommended by the Lambeth Conference of the Anglican Communion.

Tobias Stanislas Haller is vicar of Saint James Episcopal Church, Fordham, in New York City.

Paperback, 192 pages, April 2009.

Finding Hope: Cultivating God's Gift of a Hopeful Spirit

By:Ford, Marcia

Discover the freedom and joy that come when you open your heart to Hope. This practical guide gives you the inspiration, encouragement and practices you need to cultivate a hopeful spirit and thus live a more fulfilling and joyful life. Writing from personal experience and her broad knowledge of many faith traditions, Marcia Ford helps you recognize—or develop—your own personal images of hope and create a place where you can go to see the many evidences of hope in your life any time despair seeps in. She provides important learning tools that you can apply to everyday life experiences, inspiring personal stories of hope from the famous and not-so-famous and realistic exercises for creating the overall balance and peace you look to achieve in living your life connected to God. Drawing from Christian and Hebrew scripture and the wisdom of spiritual teachers from all traditions, Ford helps you realize that we all can receive a gift of hope and grace from the Divine—we just need to be open to accept it.

Topics include: • Dealing with Disappointment • It’s Not Wishful Thinking • Impossible Situations • Recovering from Loss • Hope amid Suffering • Overcoming Hopelessness • Real and Imagined Threats • The Heart of Healing • Cultivating a Hopeful Spirit • Freedom’s Fascinating Power • And more …

In a time when cynicism seems to reign, a book about finding hope is refreshing. Ford, a religion writer (The Sacred Art of Forgiveness), PW freelancer, and hospice worker, has hope to spare. Writing in the midst of a chronic illness and the aftermath of an electrical fire that damaged her home, Ford manages to communicate the essence of hope with intelligence, humor and grace. Her premise is that "when your ultimate hope is in God, your underlying philosophy of hope is based on the unshakeable belief that no matter what happens, God will see you through it." She illustrates this with stories from her own life, popular culture, history and the Bible. At the end of each chapter, Ford offers short questions to ponder along with simple practices to restore hope. She suggests some typical things, like journaling, meditating and decluttering, but also ventures into unusual recommendations, like blogging. Ford's gift is not only her accessible writing style, but also her life experience as a Christian. She has obviously spent time with different facets of Christianity and possesses an understanding of other spiritual paths. What results is an inspiring, broad-based look at sound theological, spiritual and practical principles to cultivate hope. --Publishers Weekly Starred Review

The New Interpreter's Study Bible is a first-rate aid for all who desire a serious, scholarly encounter with scripture." - Marion L Soards, Professor of New Testament Studies, Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary

"Of the current editions of Study Bibles, in my opinion the most helpful for pastors, teachers, and all students of the Scriptures has now been issued by Abingdon Press under the dedicated guidance of Dr. Walter Harrelson." - Bruce M. Metzger, Professor of New Testament, Emeritus, Princeton Theological Seminary

"The combination of theological reflection, scriptural scholarship, and the practical engagement of life and faith found in the NISB will provide a dependable and rich resource for communicators, students and other spiritual leaders." - Rob Weber, Senior Pastor, Grace Community Church, Shreveport, Louisiana.

"I would like to put this in the hands of every teacher. I have long searched for a simply written study Bible that engages our thoughts and also stimulates personal spiritual growth. I became engrossed in it and was reluctant to put it aside." - Delia Halverson, Christian Education and Curriculum Specialist, Faith Discovery Ministries

The feature of the NISB that got me to switch from two other study Bibles is the self-pronouncing text. Breaking Through the Stained Glass Ceiling: Women Religious Leaders in Their Own Words

By:Fiedler, Maureen E. (

Foreword by Kathleen Kennedy Townsend

This lively and inspiring collection of interviews features the voices of some of the most important women religious figures of our time, addressing the theme of women’s emerging leadership within a variety of faith traditions.

“Surely one of the defining breakthroughs of the last century has been the ascendancy of women into places of leadership, not least in the various religious traditions around the world. Maureen Fiedler’s new book not only documents this advance, but gives voice to a number of such faithful and courageous women ‘in their own words.’ This is a fascinating and important book.” —The Right Reverend Christopher Epting, Former Deputy for Ecumenical and Interreligious Relations, The Episcopal Church

“For Fiedler, a feminist Roman Catholic nun, interfaith work seems as important as personal faith. Here, she conducts long, impassioned interviews with women religious and spiritual leaders, scholars and activists, finding common threads in their efforts to ensure women’s full participation in their realms of worship and belief.” —MS Magazine

“As a Christian reader, it is vital, in the literal meaning of the word, that Maureen Fiedler gives voice to the biblical proposition that women as well as men are created in the image of God. That is life transforming for both and thus our world. This book of religious women’s stories makes my heart sing; I believe it will do the same for you.” —The Right Reverend Jane Holmes Dixon, Episcopal Bishop of Washington, Pro tempore, Retired

Maureen E. Fiedler is host of Interfaith Voices on national public radio stations nationwide and conducted almost all of these interviews personally. Before her radio career, she became familiar with the theology and vocabulary of religious feminism as a feminist and social justice activist in the Roman Catholic Church. She was also an interfaith activist for the Equal Rights Amendment (1978-82) and head of Catholics Act for ERA. In 1982, she was one of eight women who fasted for 37 days for ratification of the ERA. She holds a Ph.D. in government from Georgetown, and is a Sister of Loretto. She lives in Maryland.

Good Influence - Teaching the Wisdom of Adulthood

By:Heischman, Daniel R.

Young people desperately seek to develop an inner core that will not only rescue them in times of distress, but also help them to define and shape moral convictions, passions, and interests in building a better world. To find this inner coherence, they turn to their parents and teachers — the adults who are supposed to know them better than they know themselves. But these same adults are often driven and desperate to stay young, and are unclear how to achieve the wisdom and maturity of an elder to put the needs of their children and students above their own.

Young people do not want us to become part of “their” world, according to author Dan Heischman, but they invite us — and need us — to be different… to be adults, for them.

This book will help adults understand what young people are searching for, describe how to have a lasting impact on your children’s or student’s development, teach credible models of adulthood, and guide adults towards achieving the passion and wisdom for spiritual mentorship.

Drawing on thirty years of experience with parents, teachers, and students, the author uses stories and sound principles not so much to help bridge the generation gap, but to use the natural difference in maturity as a basis and guideline for more effective communication and connection.
