By Grace Transformed: Christianity for a New Millennium

By:Cosby, Gordon
This marvelous book of Gordon Cosby's sermons, which span nearly fifty years of his ministry, has been reprinted and is now available again. This collection is a substantial contribution to the most notable writings on the Christian faith in the second half of the 20th Century. It has the potential of lighting the Church's way in the new millennium.

The introductory sermon, "This I Have Learned," was preached in 1956 to a large audience of ministers at Earlham College in response to an invitation from Dr. Elton Trueblood, its president. He asked Gordon to reflect on what he had learned in the first 10 years of his ministry. What a dynamic reflection it was! The sermon was an excellent starting point for the book because in it Gordon presents his vision of church and the grounding in Christ which being church requires.

When Christ comes to a person he makes a total claim; only a total response is adequate.

The 21 sermons which follow build on that foundation as they focus on seven related themes. As the words on these pages flow in unity, the reader realizes that each sermon is a work of art. Though they were crafted over a number of years, and originally were not intended to be in book form, their underlying theme never strays from Gordon's vision of church and commitment to radical discipleship.

In his Forward to the book, Jim Wallis of Sojourners answers the question as to why another book of sermons can be so valuable. Jim lists many reasons-Gordon Cosby is truly a great preacher. He emphasizes commitment and mission, and calls the Church of the Saviour-based communities to a quality of being in the Christian life even more deeply than to doing. But, most importantly, says Wallis:

"What Gordon Cosby imparts in this extraordinary book of sermons is a vision of the local church honed in the crucible of more than five decades. It is a far more practical and powerful vision of the Body of Christ than one could find almost anywhere else. Perhaps Gordon Cosby's vision is so radical because it dares to ask and wrestle with the most basic of questions."

This book is a timeless resource. The sermons are a wake-up call that touches our minds and hearts and invites us to experience in our deepest being what it means to follow Christ. As Jean Vanier has said of it:

"... what to say, except that it is full of the love and wisdom of Jesus."

Call to Commitment

By:O'Connor, Elizabeth
This is the beginning story of the Church of The Saviour, an ecumenical church in Washington, DC, out of which the Potter's House and approximately 50 other ministries have been born. This exciting story captures how the Christian life can be a vital, life-giving, challenging experience. Sometimes called an "unconventional or non-traditional church", the Church of The Saviour is actually a church firmly rooted in the first-century church, where members are continually discovering again for the first time what it is that God wants to accomplish in and through them. In this book, O'Connor gives the full story behind the early days of this remarkable body of believers and their pioneering missions in the inner-city.

Handbook For Churches and Mission Groups

By:Cosby, G. & Devers, D.
This often-requested handbook now is back in stock. The handbook spells out the principles and structures of a church and a mission group--principles that have developed during 50 years of experience at The Church of the Saviour. Many visitors to The Church of the Saviour have read Elizabeth O'Connor's books describing the various dimensions of that church's life as it has been lived out. Their principal questions have had to do with group structure. This handbook is designed to answer those questions.

"Structure, though uninspiring to many, is the key to maintaining a quality of life that can quicken the heart of the beholder....Once the principles and structures are embodied, the possibilities for the explosion of spiritual power in the world are unlimited." From the Handbook's Introduction.
