Georgia F. Day Was Frustrated With Always Having To Go Outside Of Bridgeport To Do Her Book Shopping. At The Same Time, Business Leaders In The City Believed An Independent Bookstore Would Be Another Ingredient For The Downtown Area's Revitalization.
A Resulting Convergence Of The Parties Has Led To The Opening Of Rainy Faye Bookstore In 2003, The First Full-service Bookstore In The State's Most Populated City In A Decade. The Store Is Owned By Dr. Day, An Assistant Academic Vice President At Fairfield University, Who Is An Admitted Bookstore Junkie Who Always Wanted Her Own Business. "when I Travel, No Matter Where I Go, I Always Go To A Bookstore," She Said. "being Inside Of A Bookstore Is A Whole New World." Dr. Day Said The Store Will Carry An Eclectic Selection Of Books And Newspapers. She Also Plans To Have Appearances By Authors, Art Exhibitions, Live Comedy, Poetry, Storytelling And Jazz, Adding That There Will Be An Emphasis On Affordable Pricing And Customer Service. "i'm Going To Become Their Personal Valet And Try To Fill Thir Order In 24 Hours." Dr. Day Said, Referring To The Customers.

At The End Of The Workday, While Most Of Us Head Home To Our Families Or Squeeze In A Few Errands Before Dinner, Dr. Georgia Day
, Assistant Academic Vice President, Drives To Her Second Job - A New Bookstore She Opened In Downtown Bridgeport. Located At 940 Broad Street, "rainy Faye, An Eclectic Bookstore And Gallery," As The Sign Above The Door Reads, Is Dr. Day's Dream-come-true. Opened This Spring, Her Shop Sits Directly Across The Street From The Bridgeport Public Library, Between A Florist And A Café.
An Enclave Of Serenity In A Fast-paced World, Rainy Faye Welcomes Visitors With Its Sunny Ambience And Wide Array Of Books - Including Best-selling Fiction And Non-fiction, As Well As Hard-to-find Titles In Art, Poetry, Self-help, Religion, Photography, And Social Issues. A Children's Section Is Tucked Around The Back Corner. Surrounding The Shelves In The Main Area Are Sculptures And Paintings From Dr. Day's Own Collection And By Local Artists. The Heart Of The Shop Is A Seating Area - Perfect For Spending A Few Moments To Take A Deep Breath And Read.

She Says She Even Gets Referrals From The Two Big Book Chains, Because They Don't Want To Take The Time To Do An Extensive Search For Just One Book. "people Are Tired Of Teflon Businesses," Says Day. "they Don't Want To Go To Wal-mart To Buy Books." To Please Her More Mainstream Customers Day Does Carry All The New York Times' Bestsellers And Oprah's Picks. And She Tries To Take Notice Of Growing Trends And Alters Her Stock Accordingly--like Adding More Books Written In Spanish, Some From South American Countries. "i Use My Own Instincts," Day Says, Adding That Recently She Picked Up On The Increased Interest In Books On Entrepreneurship And Graphic Novels, And Started Loading Her Shelves With More Of Those Genres. The Big News For Rainy Faye Is The Satellite Branch Day Opened In Litchfield. It's Actually A Book Kiosk Located In An Organic Food Market Called Fiddleheads, Where She Sells Predominantly Specialty Books On Topics Like Meal Preparation And Nutrition. And She's Looking To Branch Out With More Of These Mini Shops In Other Litchfield Venues Like The Athletic Center. As For The Bridgeport Store, She Continues To Keep It Interesting By Scheduling Monthly International Seminars--the Most Recent Tackling Foreign Policy, Sheesh--and She'll Soon Be Re-introducing Monthly Jazz Nights. She Also Uses Her Eclectic Shop As A Vehicle For Exhibiting Works By Local Artists, As Well As A Forum For Local Authors To Discuss Their Books. But, Day Points Out That One Of Rainy Faye's Biggest Draws Is That It's Currently The Only Spot In Downtown Bridgeport That Offers Free Wifi Access.
