American college students lag behind in AI use, expert calls for perspective shift in education

WASHINGTON (TND) — American college students are behind in using AI in their studies compared to their foreign counterparts.

A survey from an education tech company, Chegg, found that 20% of American college students have used generative AI (GenAI) like ChatGPT or OpenAI for their studies.

"GenAI refers to deep-learning models that can generate high-quality text, images, and other content based on the data they were trained on," per IBM.

The U.S. lags behind several other countries in GenAI usage. For example, 63% of Kenya's college students have used the technology, 54% of college students in Canada, and 62% in both Saudi Arabia and Spain. The United Kingdom falls behind the U.S. with 19%.
